During a recent project I’ve been experimenting a bit with CSS tables.

I’ve come across a strange behavior in Safari, which I’m pretty sure is a bug. When an element’s display is set to “table,” it appears that Safari calculates with width of the box by subtracting the border width. When an element is set to display:block, Safari behaves normally, add the border width in addition to the set width of the box.

I’ve set up a quick demonstration to make this clear.

So far I’ve <del datetime="2009-03-05T08:16:11+00:00">only</del> tested this in Safari 3.2.1 (Mac) <ins datetime="2009-03-05T08:16:11+00:00">and Safari 4 beta (Mac)</ins>.

FF3 (Mac), Opera 9 (Mac) and IE8 (Win) all seem to be behaving as expected.

I’ll give it a try in Safari 4 beta when I get home tonight.

I retrieved the calculated width using Safari’s Web Inspector.

I’d be interested to know if anyone else has seen this, or if anyone knows of a way to code around it, aside from adding additional divs. For the moment, I’m just going to fall back on a floated layout.

WordCamp is a semi-informal meetup of WordPress users, where they get the chance to discuss all things WordPress.

As anyone who follows me on twitter probably knows, it snowed in London today. I didn’t go into work, but managed to get some work done from home.

Nevertheless, Joanne and I managed to make a few trips into the snow. I’ve uploaded a a few photos to Flickr. Highlights include the many snowfolk on our street and visiting Stella at the Landor.

There were massive amounts of snow. I can’t remember the last time I saw this much snow. We were pretty sure the back garden was going to fill up.

Elsewhere on the web, Ben Marsh created an excellent application to document the #uksnow tweets on twitter. On Flickr, several pools have sprung up to document the day.

So. A while back I asked for your advice on what to do about this blog. Thanks to everyone who responded. I know what I’m going to do, but I’m not done yet. So you’ll have to suffer with the old school blog for a while, but look out for a new, improved otrops.com. Coming to a web browser near you.

One piece of the puzzle is in place, however. Without further ado, I give you otrops quotes. I’m forever jotting down quotes from books I’m reading. And I’m always wishing that I had a place to easily store quotes that I’ve read on-line. I’m using tumblr to share and keep track of these quotes. If you haven’t tried tumblr, I highly recommend it. It does much more than quotes: links, images, audio, video and even IM conversations. It just so happens that quotes is what I wanted to keep track of, and tumblr provided a quick and simple way of doing that.

For those of you who can’t get enough of me — Hello? Still with me? Ahem, good — I’m also introducing otrops elsewhere. This is effectively my lifestream. I don’t really like the term. Mostly because my on-line existence is only a portion of my life, even if it is at times a fairly large portion. In any case, otrops elsewhere allows you to keep track of what I’m doing across the Internet. I’ve played with a few lifestreaming applications, and I settled on Soup. As with tumblr, I’ve decided to use Soup because of the simplicity of its interface. The fact that both sites allow me to use a vanity domain didn’t hurt, though.

And that’s about all the otrops I can give you. At least until I pull my finger out and launch the new blog.

When I started this blog, I made the decision that this would be a personal blog. At the time I was freelance and was thinking of launching a professional blog, which I still haven’t officially started.

I’m considering making some geeky posts — stuff about the events I’m going to and some technical posts — either on this blog or on another blog. What would you guys think if I posted the geeky items here? I know some of you would be bored, but would you just stop reading the blog? Would you be in any way interested?

A good way to gauge this is twitter. My tweets became incredibly geeky about a month ago (when I was attending WordCamp UK). For those of you following me on twitter, was that annoying? I thought I noticed that some people stopped twittering or twittered considerably less shortly after that happened. Was I just imagining that?

I write this blog primarily to keep friends and family up to date with what I’m doing, so if any of you are going to be put off by overly geeky posts, let me know.

Unfortunately, Zenni Optical, who came highly recommended by the aforementioned mambrino, don’t seem to deliver to the UK.

Instead, I decided to go with Glasses Direct, mostly because I had seen a pair I liked in a catalogue at Joanne’s parents’ house a few months ago.
I'm Twittering a lot these days. My blogging, on the other hand, has declined rapidly.

My blog posting habits have been pretty disappointing lately, I admit it. And I apologise.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been twittering a lot more. This is mostly because a number of old friends have started using Twitter. It’s great to be in regular contact with @tragle, @cecily and @duckykramp again. Newer, London-based friends like @wheelyweb and @raettig have also turned up recently. And of course, @mvancamp (aka mambrino), who’s been on there longer than anyone. It’s also great for keeping up on various bits of tech and political news.

So after trying twitter and deciding it wasn’t all that. I’ve come back. And I’m loving it.

When I get a free moment, I’m going to redesign the blog so that my tweets are fed through my rss feeds and displayed on the blog. In the meantime, you could always join twitter (or come back) and follow me.

After my recent posting spree, I’m a grand total of 52 posts, which means I’ve posted an average of one post a week. Though I managed to post something every month of the year, some months were pretty sparse. I should really try to avoid those long periods of silence, since this blog is meant to keep friends and family up to date with what I’m doing. From now on, I’ll try to post at least once a week — even if it’s about something completely random. So expect more of the same, then. Just a bit more of it.

Years ago, friends started asking me if I’d taken up watercolors. I was completely confused at first, but then it was explained to me that if you searched for my name online, most of the top results included websites with paintings seemingly attributed to me. Not surprisingly, these weren’t my work.

They were the work of Jef Van Campen (note the single ‘f’), a Belgian artist who works in oils and watercolors. For over thirty years, he has painted harbour views, still lifes and landscapes. If you’d like to view some of his work, you should take a look at Jef Van Campen’s website.

You may be wondering why I’ve chosen to tell you this. Between starting this blog, signing up for every third social networking site and posting to various user groups, most search results for “Jeff Van Campen” (with two fs) lead to my site or some site associated with me. I noticed that “Jeff Van Campen artist” was also leading to this site. I’m posting this not to drive more traffic to my site, but in the hopes that if people are searching for the other Jef Van Campen, the will find this page quickly, and search for “jef van campen artist” to find out more about the artist or have a look at his gallery.
